WHY I LOVE COWORKING | COMMUNION NEIGHBORHOOD COOPERATIVE

By: Andrea Overturf

Last summer I heard the buzz in our neighborhood, about a coworking space coming to our area!

As someone who works from home or a coffee shop most days, I was intrigued.  While I love the flexiblilty of blogging/working from home while my kids are in school, sometimes I crave more…structure and a less distracting environment.  Some days it can be tough to focus and get things done!

I eventually connected with Tim Kahle, the founder of Communion Cooperative to learn more before the space opened.  I was drawn to his vision for this much needed neighborhood space and atmosphere he and his business partners wanted to create!  And thrilled that it was going to be in Richardson, our community…

There are membership options and amenities available to suit various business needs.  I knew I wanted to be a part of it and was interested in all of the elements; cowering member, hosting events, and being a regular cafe customer!

Fast forward to December…

I began coworking during school hours.  This alone has been such a game changer for me.  A few days a week, instead of going home I head to Communion (which is less than a mile from my kids schools!) and I’m much more productive during work hours.  The front and back patios are the perfect spots to take a break or meet up with friends/colleagues.  (Not to mention great backdrops for impromptu photo shoots!)

I opted for the Open Desk membership which is perfect for my needs.  It allows access to the open seating and community areas as well as many other benefits and amenities.  Through this connection, we also coordinated the use of the event space for our first Whole30 Dallas Duo coaching group sessions!  The space was perfect for our group launch and wrap up.   See the special membership offers for this month at the end of the post.

I could go on about the features I enjoy while working at Communion but here are the biggest reasons I’v embraced coworking…

Finding a Healthier Work/Life Balance

This is something I’m working on, because with blogging there’s always one more thing to do.  I’m learning to be more mindful of setting specific work hours and not allowing work to flow into family time/evening.  Coworking has helped me do that because I have a space to work feel more of a separation   between home and work.

A Place To Connect

I’ve met some wonderful people while working at Communion, and also learned more about people I already know in the community…all by working alongside them!

A Space Where Creativity Can Flourish

By having extended work hours in a calm environment, I can get into the zone, work more efficiently, and minimize distraction.

Eat, Work, and Play at Communion

In addition to coworking, Communion Cafe is the fantastic full service coffeeshop and restaurant right next door.  My family and I love their menu options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner…and they make a lovely almond milk latte.  Communion truly has become a hub for me. I love the overall atmosphere, vibe, and food!

There are even entrees on the menu that can be modified to be Whole30 friendly…see my pics below…Two options and a few sides to create a Whole30 breakfast or lunch:

  • Lockwood Chopped Salad with Chicken or Turkey (no quinoa/peas)
  • Classic Breakfast with Eggs, Compliant Bacon, fruit
  • Add avocado, spinach, or extra egg to either dish!
